new mail check

Okay, let's see if I can relate this without being too confusing or
long winded. Basically, I'm wondering if the new mail check needs
some refinement.

When I cranked up my nnimap settings for the first time, I went into
the Server buffer and pressed `u' beside all my IMAP folders, of
which I have a ton. Then I pressed `q' twice to get back to the
Group buffer, after which I pressed `g' to update stuff. I quickly
realized that subscribing all my folders had an undesirable effect
-- the new mail check took for ever!

So, I then killed all my IMAP folders so that only those that got
new mail directly were included. Ah, that was much, much better.
Though, when I did a `B m' (hmmm... that sounds inappropriate) to
move a message from my INBOX into one of my folders, I then
discovered another problem.

At the prompt for `B m', I entered a folder that I knew existed.
The auto-expansion stuff I've got on told me "no match", which
didn't surprise me too much since the folder wasn't subscribed.
However, after entering that folder I got an error. Sure enough,
when I checked the *imap-log* buffer I saw that it blew up because
it tried to create a folder that already existed. Hmmm...

So, I went back to the Server buffer and pressed `u' beside all my
folders again. However, this time when I got back to the Group
buffer I went down and pressed `u' beside all these folders I just
subscribed to. That way these folders would be unsubscribed, but
not killed. This was kinda nice because only the "favorite" folders
would show up by default, however pressing `L' would show all the
others. However, when I pressed `g' nnimap still went and checked
all my folders that were in the .newsrc.eld, even those that were
unsubscribed in the Group buffer.

Yes, I fiddled with the possible settings for
nnimap-group-list-speed ('slow, 'fast, 'medium), however I prefer to
keep that at 'slow -- it is indeed helpful to know if I've really
got new mail in an important folder.

Finally, my suggestion/question is this: would it be possible to
have nnimap only check for new mail in those folders that are indeed
subscribed to, ignoring those that are unsubscribed but not killed?
Seems like that would be ideal, unless of course I'm overlooking
something better.

Does that make any sense?
