Hey!  I figured out my problem!  I had compiled the nnimap stuff using FSF
Emacs while Gnus had been compiled with InfoDock/XEmacs.  Apparently, mixing
and matching byte-compile formats is Not A Good Thing.  So, now I am up and
running correctly.
