I've found this to be the problem in another case too, but according
to Jake Colman's X-Mailer he's using 5.6.24 -- netrc stuff has been in
Gnus since the Quassia series.  Jake, which Gnus are you using with
nnimap?

I remember all sorts of problems when using Gnus 5.5, officially I
don't think I'll support anything older than 5.6. Inofficially, I'll
make nnimap check for netrc-stuff before using it.
