Here is the backtrace:

Signaling: (error "Selecting deleted or non-existent buffer")
  nnimap-split-articles(nil "truman")
  nnimap-request-scan(nil "truman")
  gnus-request-scan(nil (nnimap "truman" (nnimap-list-pattern "*") (nnimap-expunge-on-close always)))
  gnus-get-unread-articles(nil)
  gnus-group-get-new-news(nil)
  call-interactively(gnus-group-get-new-news)

After having generated the backtrace, I was able to manuallt open the server
via the server buffer.

Hope this helps.
