Is this a transcript of a IMAP session?  Nnimap doesn't produce theese
kind of tags.

There is nothing hard coded about "INBOX" in nnimap. When listing
groups it defaults to using "*" as a wildcard, which should get you
everything.

This is correct, you really should be able to subscribe to your IMAP
mailboxes. What problems are you seeing in Gnus?

Have a look in the buffer *imap-log* for a IMAP transcript, it could
provide clues to what the problem is.

I'm using Cyrus IMAPD 1.5.2 myself.
