I use the uw server, and it seems to accept 1,*.  We actually want
just the first and last article, not all of them.

What version are you using?   I get:

* OK robby IMAP4rev1 v10.171 server ready

and you get:

* OK terror.hungry.com IMAP4rev1 v1.0 server ready
