Hm. I just found out that my byte-compiled nnir.el gives:

,-----
| Signaling: (invalid-function (macro . #[(group) "ÁÂDCÃBB‡" [group let gname ((if (string-match "^[^:]+:" gname) (substring gname (match-end 0)) gname))] 3 ("/usr/sw/emacs/20.4/share/emacs/site-lisp/pgnus-0.96/gnus-util.elc" . 12643)]))
| gnus-group-real-name("nnimap:INBOX.news.emacs")
| byte-code("Æ	\"ƒ6
| nnir-run-imap(((query . "the")) "nnimap:INBOX.news.emacs")
| #[(x) "	\n\"‡" [search-func q x] 3]("nnimap:INBOX.news.emacs")
| mapcar(#[(x) "	\n\"‡" [search-func q x] 3] ("nnimap:INBOX.news.emacs" "nnimap:INBOX.auto.gnus.imap"))
| nnir-run-query("((query . \"the\"))")
| nnir-request-group("((query . \"the\"))" "-ephemeral" nil)
| gnus-request-group("nnir:((query . \"the\"))")
| gnus-group-read-ephemeral-group("((query . \"the\"))" (nnir "") t (#<buffer *Group*> . group) nil)
| gnus-group-make-nnir-group(nil "the")
| * call-interactively(gnus-group-make-nnir-group)
`-----

Loading the *.el file works. Strange. Does anybody have an idea, off
the head, what might be wrong? I did byte-compile nnir.el with "emacs
-batch -batch-byte-compile nnir.el", is this the problem?
