split followups to go with parents?

Hi,

for `normal' mail backends in Gnus, I have written a patch for
nnmail.el which allows you to split followups to go into the same
group as their parents. Here's what happens:

Whenever a message is written to a group, not only is the message id
written to ~/.nnmail-cache, the group it was written to is also
written into that file.

There's a function, to be put in nnmail-split-fancy, which looks for
the message id of a parent message in that file and splits the message
into the group mentioned there, if an entry was found.

Can this functionality be added to nnimap in some way? One
possibility would be to just use the ~/.nnmail-cache file as with
other mail backends. Another possibility would be to somehow store
this information on the IMAP server, but I'm not sure how one would do
that. A last problem is to hook the function into the nnimap
splitting mechanism.

I'm not an nnimap user yet (due to lack of IMAP servers around here),
but I like to plan ahead :-)
