nnimap stuck doing J s on denied server

Platform: XEmacs 20.4, linux, Gnus v5.8.8 (CVS checkout from July 26 2000)

I currently have four different IMAP secondary servers, and the
primary news server under agent control.

At home I cannot reach the three IMAP servers at work, and at work I
cannot reach the IMAP server at my home machine, so I "deny" them in
the server buffer.

The order in which they appear in gnus-secondary-select-methods, is
	tyr (work)
	doohan (home)
	neptun (work)
	apollo (work)

Right now I am trying to do a J s, to update the agent, it seems to go 
through apollo and neptun, and then it stops with "Server denied" in
the minibuffer.

The xemacs is completely dead.  It does not take C-g and it does not
update itself when overlapping windows are moved away.  I don't know
what would happen after 5 minutes or so, because after that I just
kill the entire xemacs process.

I also freeze xemacs if I forget to deny one of the unavailable IMAP
servers before I do a "g".  Sometimes I can break this off with a C-g, 
but most times I will have to kill the xemacs process and start over
again.
