There are two scenarios:

1) The client has an "expunge on folder close" or "expunge on quit" option.
   If you selected this, you've thrown away much of the functionality of
   IMAP, specifically the ability to share folders. If you're in a
   shared folder environment, don't turn on this option.

2) The IMAP client is braindead, and doesn't understand that CLOSE
   is really EXPUNGE + SELECT "".

Both behaviours are absurd (in my opinion) and should be eradicated.
