My mistake. I thought you were talking about the prefix.
The difference between
INBOX.gnus-imap
and
~/Private/spool/mbo
is sort of server dependent.
I believe for both the UWashington and Cyrus servers, INBOX.foo means
that mailbox foo is kept on the server's filesystem; I haven't looked
at the details of how or where it sits.
~/path/foo means the folder sits in a subdirectory of your home
directory; you could just as well have /absolute/path/foo. The Cyrus
server, as far as I can tell, simply doesn't let you have mailboxes
anywhere other than its filesystem, so you *can't* have groups that
look like ~/Private/spool/mbo on it. In other words, it's not just a
difference in formatting or presentation, I think it's a difference in
where the folder is.
A related note: it would be nice if I could set a default folder path
for each IMAP server in nnimap. So, in this case, all the folders on
the CIS server would have default path ~/Private/spool, and you could
just refer to it as
nnimap+CIS: mbo
