No login prompt with 0.3.23

I am not getting a login prompt when using 0.3.23 and, therefore, am getting
"server denied" messages.

I am using an NT-based IMAP server.  Must I specify an nnimap-auth-method?  I 
did try specifying '(nnimap-auth-method login)' as part of my
gnus-secondary-select-methods but to no avail.

What do you suggest I try to help debug this?
