The function isn't required by Gnus and it was just a dummy function
in 0.98.

Could you (setq debug-on-error t), start gnus and send us the
backtrace?  Gnus shouldn't be calling it, but if it is I can put the
dummy function back in (or try to fix Gnus, or both).
