uidvalid

What /is/ the purpose of uid validity?

I ask because one of my nnimap groups is now giving me:

"Group Mail/Family is not uidvalid.  Continue?"

What should I do to correct things?  What is wrong?  (Why should the
UIDs be different?)  Why doesn't performing gnus-group-get-new-news
solve the problem?
