nnimap speed (was Re: using the Gnus Agent together with nnimap)

This is not true for me. Maybe I don't have some variable set
correctly?

Here's the situation: I use nnimap-split-rule to split my INBOX, and
things that don't match any of the patterns stay in INBOX. At the
moment, I have three ticked articles in INBOX and 8 marked for expiry.
If I hit SPC to enter the group, I get a summary buffer, with just the
three ticked articles, within a second. If I hit C-u SPC, I am asked
"How many articles... (default 963)?" I hit RET to get the default,
and then it takes over a minute for a summary buffer (with just 11
articles) to appear.

There is a similarly length delay when entering INBOX if I've just
started gnus and there is a new message in INBOX.

How can I speed things up?

Gnus v5.8.3 (fairly recent CVS version), GNU Emacs 20.4.2
(alphaev5-dec-osf4.0f, X toolkit)
