Yes, similar to POP or NNTP.

No. Of course it's possible, but I don't think it's very useful.

This varies widely, you can try "telnet pop.newsguy.com 143" to see if
they talk IMAP too, but AFAIK they don't.

If they only offer POP access you could .forward your mail into a IMAP
mailbox somewhere else if you want need IMAP. Or simply ask them if
they will support IMAP as well.
