I can't speak to the appointment requests, which I assume are just
some annoyingly formatted mail (possibly with embedded VBA, blech),
but the calendaring system doesn't go through the mail interface. It's
"something else" and it very much smells like a Microsoft kind of
protocol. 

The contact database is a little more interesting; contact lists show
up as IMAP folders, but the entries just have the name of the contact
in the Subject: line, and a blank body. Very odd.
