I use it as an orthogonal view onto the space of groups.  One can
structure groups hierarchically by name, but often, there are two
different ways to structure it.

My groups are named according to some technical commonality.  For
example, all mailing lists are in nnml:auto.* groups which are
auto-expire.

The topics are grouped by semantic similarity, so there's a topic
`sw.emacs' which contains the Emacs newsgroups in addition to
`nnml:auto.gnus' and `nnml:auto.gnus.imap'.
