Actually, I am bouncing between two environments.  I have no problems when
running FSF Emacs 20.2 and Gnus 5.6.24.  I do have problems when running with
InfoDock 4.0.1 (based on XEmacs 21.0) and Gnus 5.6.22.  Mark's suggestion
does work for me, however.  Interestingly, without using Mark's workaround, I 
never get prompted for anything nor do I have any explicit errors.  It simply 
says "server denied".
