Did you try 0.8.x?  That was the only SSLeay-version I got to work. I
guess the bug was introduced with SSLeay 0.9.0 or so.

I've updated the "known problems" page to say you should get OpenSSL
0.9.3 or later instead of just OpenSSL, thanks.
